When I was a little girl my mom was my hero. She swished around the house in her high heels and calf-length skirts, her hair never out of place in its perfect bob. To this day, if I close my eyes, I can remember the way she smelled- her signature scent, and the wrap she never failed to drape around her neck and over her shoulder.
Maybe we can't all shop designer creations or buy a new, expensive purse on a whim... but everyone can and should have a signature piece. Some little bauble that makes us feel elegant and pretty, oh, so pretty.
My Signature Pieces:
I'm a stick in the mud where it comes to jewelry. I wear a small pendant around my neck with a turquoise heart(discontinued) on it from Tiffany that my husband and daughters picked out for me years ago. I'm not a big 'hearts' kinda girl but this one has very special significance and I will wear it as a sign of my family's love and affection to the grave.
On my left wrist, I wear two silver bracelets, also from Tiffany, that my dear friend(who has amazingly good taste) sent me after going into the OR with her when her son was born via emrgency c-section and Dad was too much of a mess, afraid he'd lose them both. I've never admitted until now but I was terrified, too- I just have this God-given talent of being able to turn off the switch of my emotions and do what needs to be done in a bad situation. I never take those bracelets off. To me they represent enduring friendship and life. I was there to see a new, wonderful, amazing person come into the word- an opportunity for which I will always be grateful. Though I've seen other births, this was different because it was a friend, and I will never forget.
My go-to earrings are also from Tiffany. The 'cushion' line(dc'd), I believe has been discontinued but I love the simple elegance of these earrings and they go with everything, night or day.
I also have two cashmere open hoodies that I wear constantly. They are incredibly soft and can be dressed up or down. I think they are quite utilitarian, especially here in California where we don't get that many days that are super cold, but enough cool, sweater-weather days that these get tons of use.
So, your mission, should you choose to accept it: Either figure out what YOUR signature pieces are or get one or two. I suggest they be utilitarian and give you a little boost of self-confidence, maybe a little glee, sort of like looking at the engagement ring on your finger. :)
Some Suggestions:
A cashmere wrap: ultimately indulgent and useful in a number of ways: draped around your neck like a scarf with a winter coat, as a wrap all on its own on a cool day, a wrap with your favorite off-the-shoulder dress on a night out on the town or just used as a scarf on its own for a sophisticated look. Check out the "Whisper" cashmere wrap I found at Nordstrom for under $80.
If you aren't into scarves and wraps, how about some simple yet sophisticated jewelry like a pendant from Tiffany. I have loved butterflies since I read the quotation "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, he turned into a butterfly." This beautiful butterfly pendant is from Tiffany.com.
Or invest in a fabulous eternity bracelet, also from Tiffany. I've shown the sterling silver versions but if you can afford it, by all means upgrade if you like! Both these items come in at $300 or less.
Other choices I like are the darling sterling silver and blue enael ladybug pendant from Tiffany's.
Also from Tiffany's, if you'd like an uber signature piece, try a pendant with your initial on it from the Tiffany Notes line. These are pieces that you could wear regularly or if you're someone who likes to change up accessories, these would be a decadent addition.
If jewelry is not your thing or maybe you love jewelry and like to change it up to accessorize with your outfit, you could also go for a scarf- anything from a large drapey scarf to a small scarf to tie around your ponytail. Hermes is to scarves as Tiffany is to jewelry. The one pictured to the right is called a 'Twilly' and can be used as a ladies necktie, a bracelet or wrapped around a ponytail- you could even use it to spice up a handbag with similar colors.
Coach also sells their version of a "Twilly". They have a wide assortment in their stores. Go to Coach.com to see some online choices. If you pick one with colors you wear regularly or something somewhat neural, you can get alot of use out of it.
The list of signature pieces goes on and on: hats, shoes, a handbag with matching tech accesories(iPad cover, phone case), earrings, a summertime anklet, vintage brooches... It's up to you. After all, it is YOUR signature!
(This butterfly is currently available on Ebay. Click it to take you to the listing. There are tons more vintage brooches and jewelry for great prices on Ebay).
Be real. Be in love with lfe. Be You.
